Until today, it did not come to my mind that we just got a Solar Eclipse the past Thursday, and I have been having a headache since. The mystery of Universe always get me in awe. How about you?
What I am trying to convey in the last blog is that our believe system has a tremendous influence on how we interpret the world and the phenomenon. The Eastern culture has thousands years of tradition in believing the connectivity of Human, Heaven and Earth and the relativity of all things at fundamental level. From that principle, Confucius teaches “loving other”, “do onto others as you would have them do onto you”.
The Buddhism considers all things in the universe are made up by energy. Energy can change forms but never disappears. The Heart Sutra speaks of “Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is form. Form is no other than Emptiness and Emptiness is no other than Form”. Buddha teaches us impermanent nature of the world we live in, and that destiny is in everyone’s own control. And there are numerous paths to achieve enlightenment, Buddhism is only one of the ways. There is nothing superior or inferior. Cause and effect is the mechanism of manifestation. We harvest what we sow. He told us that he can only show us the way, everyone of us have to take self responsiblity to achieve perfection of wisdom.
Isabel Hickey explains these concepts as following: “Spirituality is not an end in itself, it is a means of getting somewhere. This world of appearance is not the creative world; this is the world of manifestation that always changes. We create our conditions inside us and if we want to change what is manifesting in the world of appearance, we must change ourselves and our consciousness. That’s how we change what happens. I’ve seen this verified over and over. Never saw it wrong.”
Passing down from generation to generation, these fundamental concepts have deeply instilled in the mindset of Eastern society in its thousand years of history. Scientists did DNA testing, they found the aboriginals Native Americans are very closely related to ancient asian tribes. I think there got to be some linkage that Aboriginals Native Americans belief system is so much the same fundamentally like the Eastern culture. I wrote a pieces in the past comparing how East and West different in world view, quoting Doctor Villoldo’s observation and that of the book of Between Heaven and Earth, the blog also has a link to explain how energy particles are connectors of everything in the universe.
Columbus is not the first person “discover” America. Nearly 500 years before him, there are several expeditions to the land. One of them is a Chinese Monk (慧僧), his story is recorded in the Chinese history text. New York Times had an article about it. Chinese had mastered sophisticated sailing techniques long before the Europeans, but they did not use it to colonize or “civilize” others.
United States is a immigrant country. We are endorsed with a very diversified culture background from all over the world. This is our strength as well as our problems. If we are open-minded and learn to discern, then such diversity can serve us for better alignment with truth and making American great!
By the way, another excellent on this subject can be found in Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts.
