The current state of affair reminds me of a story in the bible. The Bible account says that at Babel, God acted to “confuse their language that they may not listen to [“understand,” footnote] one another’s language.” (Genesis 11:7) As a result, the workers “left off building the city” of Babel and were scattered “over all the surface of the earth.” (Genesis 11:8, 9)
Yes, people speak different languages, people have different opinions about what reality is, people have different worldview, different religion, etc. These difference triggers arguments that escalate from individual to group and even to nations. Things are getting so perplexing and bewildering. And if we do not stick to the principle of respectful, kindness and nonviolence, the arguments can easily turn into some kind of war that hurts both side of the contenders, such as the trade war between US-China is just one mild example. The worst economic downturn is taking a toll of the American farmers is a testimony of damages done.
For the more extremes, the killers holds a mental arrogance that themselves are the absolute right, the absolute superior, and have the power to eliminate others existence when hatred drive them to kill others who have a different religion or worship God in their own way. These killers are acting Satan in the name of God. Because people in their right mind will not go out to kill other.
As a Chinese immigrant living in US approaching 30 years, it is so hard to observe increasing bitterness sentiments between the two countries. But is not the trade war between US-China also a reflection of the tension of different domestic interest groups within both countries as well? I have never involved in politics until this last year, and I hate to say I loath the whole thing. So many pretentious and hypocrisies, so much pain and hurt, and the ugliness of nationalism and racism!
Maybe President Trump would like to emulate Abraham Lincoln. But his action showed him more like a Don Quixote fighting with the windmill than an impartial jury , he is as capitalist as the Communist of his Chinese opponents. As air-headed as Louis XV, he may as well announced that: “After my 2nd term, the flood!” As much as President Trump is criticizing Chinese Communist Party, we ask will the trade war help to reduce the mammoth budget deficit? Will his victory recharge the American education system to improve the workers/labor skills so they can have equal chance of opportunities for social advancement? Will his belligerence help improve the common people’s social welfare like medical insurance?
Maybe we should revisit civil war – is not the civil war initially triggered by the fighting over tariff policy ? The southern states produce cotton and northerns make industrial goods, one side favors high tariff and the other would want low? It is likely the robot is going to take over the agriculture production in our time.
